Abstract

Today, as in the past, the student of things political feels almost compelled to wonder about the relationship between the spiritual and the temporal. As he wonders, he soon discovers that this relationship has been a long one, that in some historical periods — as in the Middle Ages — it has signified the very essence of the period, and that it has involved and will continue to involve very complex issues. In discovering these aspects of the relationship in question, he firmly concludes that the question of the rapport between church and state will be of importance for years to come.
