Abstract

After some preliminary background information on the performance characteristics of photovoltaic solar cells, recommended standard procedures for the outdoor measurement of the rated or ‘peak’ performance of cells and modules are described. These procedures include the selection and outdoor calibration of the reference cells or modules which are used to monitor the irradiance in terms of standard sunlight of a specified spectral irradiance distribution.

Details are also given of methods of measuring the relative spectral response of solar cells, their temperature coefficients of current and voltage and their internal series resistance.

Definitions of some relevant meteorological terms are given in an Appendix.
