Abstract
Piecemeal knowledge-formation (to be distinguished from the production of syntheses of knowledge) may be described as a sequence of acts as follows:
-
(1)
A cognitive problem is raised, i.e. a problem, the solution of which deserves to be confirmed.
-
(2)
A set of hypotheses (h, h’, h”,...) is framed each one of which could be accepted as a solution of the problem, provided that it deserves to be confirmed.
-
(3)
A testing plan for (h, h’, h”,...) is designed. This plan consists of subplans for subsets of (h, h’, h”,...). For the sake of simplicity I will confine my attention to a single hypothesis A in the set (h, h’, h”,...).
-
(4)
A testing plan for h is implemented. As a result a body e of information is collected, e will be employed as evidence pro or con h.
-
(5)
A verdict about h is passed in the light of the evidence e. ‘h is (strongly, moderately or weakly) supported by e’, or ‘h is (strongly, moderately or weakly) undermined by e’.
