Abstract

The cockroach is an excellent choice for many different kinds of behavioral experiments. One reason for its suitability is that it does not fly, hop or burrow; thus no special requirements are needed to reconstruct a relatively natural setting for an experiment. As with all animals, however, cockroaches become stressed when placed in experimental arenas or other devices. To compensate for this problem, keep in mind the necessity of allowing the cockroaches to become accustomed to your experimental setup before actually collecting data.
