Genetic Diseases, Hair Structure and Elemental Content

  • Chapter
The Biology of Wool and Hair

Summary

Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), quantitative proton probe analysis (PIXE) and a bioassay with dermatophytes we have set out to assess the value of hair as a source of information in genetic disorders. At the present stage each method has proven to be of value if only in a restricted sense and further elaboration of the techniques as well as baseline studies are needed before single hair fibre analysis can be routinely used.
