Abstract

In the not-too-distant future it is very likely that the in utero detection of fetal abnormalities will be reliable and comprehensive. Biochemical and cytogenetic techniques used early in pregnancy may allow the clinician and his patient sufficient time to consider therapeutic abortion as a solution to the problem of an abnormal fetus. It is also possible that some metabolic disorders may be ‘treated’ in utero. However, as most of these studies have been carried out on amniotic fluid, it is highly unlikely, in the light of present knowledge and experience, that all pregnancies will be tested.
