The Diving Response in Man

Abstract

It is argued that the diving reflex theory has shortcomings which are exposed when studies are made of voluntarily diving birds. Consideration of the physiology of marine mammals is made, particularly of the mechanisms for functioning under temporary anaerobic conditions. The implications for human diving are considered.
