Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 11))

Abstract

In this short paper the scanty evidence available on the behaviour of fixated sows will be evaluated on the basis of the behaviour of unrestrained sows, and potential basic behavioural needs will be discussed. Behavioural needs may be defined as the need to perform:

  1. 1)

Behaviour which is necessary for the maintenance of a normal physiological state

  2. 2)

Behaviour which serves other significant functions, e.g. care of skin

  3. 3)

Behaviour which, when prohibited, can cause frustration and/or damage to the individual.
