Abstract
The aim of this paper is not only to throw light on some aspects of sow health and housing but also to force ourselves to think about and try to answer the following three questions:

Has the development of swine environment — housing and management — been beneficial in all respects from the point of view of animal health and welfare during the last two decades? In other words, are we using the possibilities of modern technology in an appropriate way?

2)
Is the increased use of antibiotics or other drugs the best method of fighting diseases partly or totally caused by environmental factors?

3)
If the answer to these two questions is ‘no’, what can we do to change the situation?
