Animal Well-Being and Housing Systems for Piglets

The Welfare of Pigs

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 11))

Abstract

Experiments are described in which different housing systems have been compared with respect to aspects of well-being and economics. There are risks connected with increasing the intensiveness of our animal housing systems. The animal has problems in adapting. Behavioural research makes it possible to recognise the symptoms which are the consequences of these problems.

The behaviour of piglets has been studied in a straw barn compared with a battery cage. The technical comparison showed hardly any difference. In the battery cage changes in activity and abnormal behaviour - the consequence of an inadequate environment - appeared to coincide and occurred more often.

The conclusion seems to be warranted that the straw barn for weaned piglets can be considered an alternative to present housing systems.

This is true in respect of the technical data as well as behavioural criteria for animal well-being.
