Conclusion

Abstract

An objective evaluation of von Hartmann’s philosophy and historical importance is not an easy task. He was a controversial figure during his life and remained such after his death. His friends and admirers were understandably influenced in his evaluation as a philosopher by their personal appreciation for him as a man. This fact may question their objectivity in the mind of an impartial observer. On the other hand, his professional opponents were eager to seize every opportunity to belittle his endeavors and positive contributions to the cause of philosophical research under the guise of objective criticism. This makes them equally suspect with regard to a genuine representation of his philosophical significance. To find the balance between the two extremes and to present a realistic value-judgment concerning von Hartmann’s philosophical system is the obligation of the unbiased student of history if he wishes to serve the truth.
