Abstract

“Marine pollution” was defined as such by the Intergovernmental Working Group on Marine Pollution created for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment which was held at Stockholm in June 1972 1: “The introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the marine environment (including estuaries), resulting in such deleterious effects as harm to living resources, hazards to human health, hindrance to marine activities, including fishing, impairement of quality for use of sea water, and reduction of ameneties.” Marine pollution may be classified in four principal types:

  • bacterial pollution

  • chemical pollution

  • radioactive pollution

  • thermal pollution

to which a fifth type should be added, secondary pollution due to physicchemical modifications of the marine environment.2
