A Trip on a Volcano

  • Chapter
Symphony of the Earth

Abstract

My chance companion in the gloomy dining room of Albergo Eremo was anxious to know why I had been staying at that lonely place for a week already. When he learned I was a stone hunter his immediate reply came: “What minerals are you looking for ?” Now this is a question which a geologist is often asked. To make clear, in a few words, the aim of a scientific excursion is by no means an easy task. Moreover, most people expect to hear that the main point concerned has an economic background. Therefore, personally I am accustomed to answer that sort of queries very briefly and always in the same stereotyped way. Thus, in this particular case, too, I simply declared to be interested in: “limestone”.
