Abstract

The Dutch Republic, the northern part of the Netherlands, had many features that distinguished it from the other countries of the seventeenth century. Although small, it was one of the great powers of the age. The administration was less centralized and absolutist than that of any state thus far discussed. The political regime, like that of England, may be called aristocratic. But, unlike England, the Dutch Republic lacked a centralized government, and the most influential political class was not the gentry, but the urban patriciate. The political structure of the southern parts of the Netherlands, which remained subject to Spain, followed more the pattern of French and Spanish absolutism. Yet both parts had much in common because they had developed under similar historical conditions.
