These are verbs which ‘help’ or’ supplement’ another verb. Dutch has four modal auxiliaries* which form a separate category not only by virtue of their use but also because of their formation.

Usually, though not always, with the understanding that only the two western provinces called Holland are being referred to.
Strictly speaking, the two westernmost provinces of Belgium (see map), but in colloquial usage referring to the whole Dutch-speaking part of the country.
