Abstract
Examinations of Soviet doctrine almost invariably lead to the question, “How much of this is ritual?” That is, doctrinal writings produced in the Soviet Union can be viewed ritualistically — how do they conform to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism, or whatever is the current form of orthodoxy — or they can be viewed realistically.

S. is unknown to this writer. He may heve been A. A. Samoilo, a former high ranking officer in the Imperial Army, although this seems unlikely. It is most doubtful that A. S. was A. A. Svechin.
