Abstract
Not much is known of Epictetus’ life. A contemporary of Plutarch and Tacitus, he was born a slave in a commercially important city in Phrygia called Hierapolis around A.D. 50, and probably died between 125 and 130, though scholars are not agreed on all the dates of events of his life. He was the son of a slave mother, and his emancipation may have occurred at the death of his master Epaphroditus, a freedman himself and Nero’s secretary.
