Abstract
Normal neuronal operations depend upon the orderly development of type-specific geometrical features of different classes of neurons and the establishment of appropriate synaptic relations. Analysis of aberrant neurogenetic processes must proceed from knowledge of normal temporo-spatial patterns of cortical development and identification of factors that have a profound impact on physiologic properties of neuronal organizations. These considerations have guided our studies in recent years towards two major objectives: definition of the time course of neuronal differentiation in the cerebral cortex of preterm and older infants, and specification of processes of particular importance for the attainment of optimal neuronal and synaptic functions.
