Abstract

Before the time of the Reformation the sick in the Netherlands were nursed by nuns; charity was practised by rich people by way of doing good works. In the following centuries nursing in the hospitals was mostly left to ill.bred women. Sick-nurses (“diaconessen”;) came from pastor Fliedner’s houses in Germany to the Netherlands in the first half of the nineteenth century, and in the second half girls from the higher classes began to devote themselves to nursing in the hospitals not without resistance (Jeltje de Bosch Kemper).
