Abstract
The literal meaning of the name Rājapatigu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala is unknown. Gu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala (Skt. ku\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala), ear-ring, is mentioned in Old Javanese literature as one of the Royal insignia. It is remarkable that in the Nāg. in two places patik-gu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala and in two other places pratigu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala is found. Probably both words are corrupt: neither makes good sense. Evidently the names must be understood as referring to Royal regulations. In the Nāg. they are mentioned with reverence, and therefore it seems strange that the correct name should have been forgotten or corrupted. Perhaps the words pratigu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala (Nāg. cantos 88–3 and 89–1) and patik gu\( \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {n} \underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}\to {d} \)ala (cantos 79–2 and 81–1) partially owe their strange forms to the exigencies of metres.
