Abstract

The general concept of auto-immune disease began to take form in 1938 with Dameshek’s and Schwartz’s demonstration of haemolysin in some patients with acute haemolytic anaemia. Real advances only came, however, when the technique that Coombs, Mourant, and Race had developed to detect incomplete Rh antibodies (the direct Coombs test) was applied to patients with various types of haemolytic anaemia.
