Abstract

Chronic disease in man, like the general process of ageing, may usually depend on changes intrinsic to the body, but the environment can never be forgotten. Auto-immune manifestations may be modified by cold and exposure, by microbial infection, and by psychosocial factors. In recent years there have been many indications that, in one way or another, infection can have an important influence in modifying or even initiating auto-immune disease.
