Abstract
CAPD has gained increasing acceptance in the United Kingdom (UK) as a primary form of dialysis treatment for patients in end-stage renal failure (ESRF). The rate of increase in the number of patients on this treatment since 1979 has exceeded that of haemodialysis and of renal transplantation (Kerr, 1981). There is no doubt that CAPD provides an adequate form of dialysis treatment with a number of distinct advantages over haemodialysis. However, it does suffer from a few major problems which limit its use (Gokal et al.,1980a; Nolph et al.,1980). This paper outlines the current state of CAPD in the UK, together with the implications for the care of ESRF patients that arise from the rapid increase in the use of this technique.
