The genus Musa has 35 species and, of these, M. textilis is the most important for fibre production. The plants have roots which are near the surface and underground rhizomes which spread and bud. The aboveground part of the plant consists of a pseudostem formed from overlapping leaf bases; the true stem, which bears the inflorescence, arises from the centre of the pseudostem. The commercial fibre is the sclerenchyma of the leaf bases.
