Abstract

Once the Japanese Serow, Capricornis crispus crispus Temminck, endemic to Japan, was an endangered species because of excessive and illegal hunting. In 1934 the serow, which is distributed throughout Japan except Hokkaido and adjacent small islands, was nominated as a Natural Monument of Japan by the Cultural Properties Protection Act of 1925, and in 1955 it was upgraded to a Special Natural Monument by the Ministry of Education. Thereafter it has been protected completely under the Act.
