Morphological characteristics of Japanese serow, with special reference to the interdigital glands

The Biology and Management of Capricornis and Related Mountain Antelopes

Abstract

The Japanese serow, a special natural monument in Japan, has been preserved since 1955. Present investigators had an opportunity to survey anatomically more than a thousand Japanese serows which were harvested in Gifu Prefecture from 1979 to 1985, with the permission of the Agency of Cultural Affairs. In this report, the anatomical features of the animals are described in comparison with those of domestic bovine ruminants, paying special attention to the morphology and functional meaning of the interdigital gland, which has been well known since the early 1900s as one of the scent glands of ruminants (Pocock 1910).
