Abstract
Special precautions are needed in the chemotherapy of the premature and newborn infant whose renal and hepatic function is not fully developed. This subject is dealt with separately (see section 21). Because of the increased likelihood of infection occurring in patients with renal and hepatic insufficiency, and because of the serious nature of infection in these compromised patients, an understanding of the use of antibacterial drugs in these situations is very important if toxic effects are to be avoided.
