Abstract
Until recently the most widely encountered anaerobic infections have been those associated with Clostridia. However, the growing importance of the non-clostridial anaerobic bacteria has been recognised over the past 10 to 15 years. In particular, infections caused by Bacteroides spp. and the anaerobic streptococci have assumed an importance that is having many therapeutic repercussions.
