Metronidazole

  • Chapter
Antibacterial Drugs Today

Abstract

Metronidazole has been used effectively for many years in the management of protozoal infestation, both with Trichomonas and Entamoeba histolytica. However, although it was found to be effective in Vincent’s angina some 15 years ago (Shinn, 1962), it was not until the recent upsurge of interest in anaerobic infection had occurred, that the agent became established as a powerful anti-anaerobic drug. Its activity, particularly against the obligate anaerobes, recently reviewed by Ingham et al. (1975a), places it amongst the drugs of first choice in these infections.
