Body water, electrolytes and acid-base balance

  • Chapter
Essential Medicine

Abstract

Man has evolved from primitive forms of water life. He is no longer dependent on an aquatic external environment but the metabolism of his cells still occurs in a medium of water and dissolved salts. Each cell is a little sac of fluid suspended in a surrounding of fluid. The volume and composition of the body fluids must be kept constant despite wide fluctuations in intake and metabolism.
