Abstract
By far the greater proportion of the total amount of compost made will be used to grow plants in containers of one sort or another. The usual range of containers includes seed boxes made of wood or plastic and individual containers made of clay, plastic, cardboard. paper or peat. Only a relatively small amount of compost will be used to grow plants in borders or be compressed into blocks which have sufficient tensile strength not to require a retaining wall. The formulation and preparation of composts has so far been discussed without considering the effects which the type of container can have upon both the compost and the plant.
