Abstract
There are a number of bulky materials which can be used either separately or in various combinations to make loamless mixes, the choice of a particular material is usually determined by its availability, cost and local experience of its use. In northwest Europe peat is the material most widely used in loamless mixes, and in the usa bark, vermiculite and perlite are also extensively used.
