Abstract
A commercial firm encountered problems in the grinding and polishing of conicoid contact lenses. The base curves of the lenses are plunge cut into cylindrical blanks on a lathe, and some simple coordinate geometry relating the parameters of the incised curve to the lathe settings showed that an elementary mathematical error had occurred in the specifications for the lathe.
