The Transcrystallised Interphase in Thermoplastic Composites

  • Conference paper

Abstract

We have found that application of stress at the interface between a fibre and a supercooled polymer melt will result in the growth of a trans-crystallised interphase, independent of the fibre type and the crystallisation temperature. This is in direct contrast to results obtained from quiescent crystallisation, where we show that the occurrence of transcrystallisation is dependent on fibre type, crystallisation temperature, and matrix molecular weight. This relation between stress-induced nucleation and transcrystallisation leads us to propose that the origin of transcrystallisation is related to the interfacial stresses caused by cooling two materials with a large difference in thermal expansion coefficient.
