Use of Flow Microcalorimetry to Study the Adsorption of 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)Propyl Methacrylate onto Alumina Trihydrate under Near Anhydrous Conditions

  • Conference paper

Abstract

A flow microcalorimeter has been used in series with two HPLC detectors to investigate the adsorption of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate onto alumina trihydrate under near anhydrous conditions. The thermal response measured by the flow microcalorimeter was unusually complex. This has been explored by investigating the effects of silane solution concentration, temperature, and pre-drying of the ATH, on the thermal and HPLC detector responses. It has been proposed that the adsorption progresses by a sequence of steps; hydrolysis of the silane; adsorption of the silanol; adsorption of methanol with desorption of silanol; desorption of water; desorption of methanol.
