Carbon Fibre Surfaces and Their Analysis

Controlled Interphases in Composite Materials

Abstract

Chemical analysis of C-fibres after controlled surface treatment (wet oxidation and anodic oxidation)have been performed by total oxygen and nitrogen analysis, organic blocking methods, thermal desorption with in situ gas analysis, ESCA and IGC.

Additionally, the fibre surfaces have been characterized by BET, Laser RAMAN Spectroscopy and Relative Fibre Capacitance (RFC).

The effect of surface treatment on the adhesion in resins was measured directly by the conventional ILSS method. RFC-results correlate surprisingly well with ILSS data.

It is shown, that the improved adhesion by surface treatment is mainly due to chemical interaction in the interface. BET-effects play a minor role. Carboxylic groups contribute not more than 1/3 to the effect caused by the total of surface oxides. The role of basicity is discussed in more detail.
