Effect of Tribochemical Reaction of PTFE Transferred Film with the Substrate on its Adhesion and Wear Behavior

Abstract

The adhesion behavior of PTFE and its composite on carbon steel was studied in a UHV system. It was found that the adhesion force of PTFE or its zinc composite in contact with carbon steel was negligible under static condition, but it increased significantly after rubbing. The transferred film formed upon rubbing was studied by ESCA and Auger spectroscopy. Evidence was found that chemical reaction occurred in these systems as the result of rubbing, with the formation of iron and zinc fluorides. These new species of chemical compounds, which appear to be very strongly bonded at the interface, were found to be present only at the interface between the transferred film and the substrate. This part of the transferred film which is in intimate contact with the carbon steel substrate does not appear to play a role in the wear behavior of the system.
