Abstract

Jaundice occurs when the total bilirubin level in the serum rises above 2 mg per 100 ml. It may be classified pathophysiologically into the following categories:

  • haemolysis

  • dyserythropoiesis

  • non-haemolytic hyperbilirubinaemias

  • hepatocellular

  • extra- and intrahepatic cholestasis
