Abstract
The term ‘diarrhoea’ is best restricted to describing the passage of large amounts of poorly formed stool. Most viral and bacterial diarrhoeas rarely last for more than a few days and if diarrhoea continues for more than 2 weeks infective diarrhoea is unlikely. Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica are exceptions to this (see Chapter 10).
