Abstract
The figures presented in this section relate to a surface which is typical of those produced by the lapping process. Such a surface is generally random in nature. Two other features are also detectable on the surface. These are small flats which have been generated by the action of the lap during the machining process, a mechanism adequately described as controlled and deliberate wearing. Finally a number of individual underlying valleys are produced, approximately equally spaced, although not all of the same depth, which were originally caused by the action of the previous machining process.
