Abstract

Central to the development of mathematics and its applications is the idea of a function. The idea will probably be a familiar one, especially in the guise of a graph or as something like f(x) = x 2 + x 3 + x 4 or f(x) = x3 - 1 / x + 2. However, there is a more general notion of function which it is important to understand in order to develop all the ideas we are going to encounter.
