Abstract

Meningitis usually presents as an acute febrile illness with headache, vomiting and photophobia. On examination the classical features are neck stiffness and a positive Kernig’s sign. Patients who are immunosuppressed by disease or treatment may present with a less typical picture such as an acute confusional state, or drowsiness.
