Abstract

During the past twenty years, the surface mining industries have passed through major technical and organizational changes. Total mechanization of extractive operations has almost been achieved and through ‘take-overs’ and amalgamation, capital and production have been concentrated in fewer hands. In addition the industries are expected to increase output by at least 6% per annum up to at least the 1970s. This requires improvement of business and manager performance. Decisions made in business management can affect both the progress of the business and the economy and the society in which the individual business lives.
