Abstract
Floras of various islands differ widely in origin, richness and composition. Distant islands which may be hundreds of kilometers from other land-masses are often rich in endemics, if they are of ancient geological origin. Islands of more recent origin are often poor in species and have but few endemics. Those which have undergone recent nudation or have recently emerged from under the ice or out of the sea are thus often ecologically poorly advanced.
