Abstract
Migration is still essentially the result of what Warren Thompson has called “differential population pressure”; there is still a push out of the Netherlands, and a pull from other countries. But the flow of people is not the more or less haphazard one it used to be; it has been directed into a canal, with the two governments acting as sluice-keepers.
