Abstract

The equipment level is the lowest level of the production planning and control hierarchy. Above the equipment level sit the factory, shop and cell levels and as we descend the hierarchy broad objectives specified in the master production schedule I (MPS I) have become more and more detailed commands. The timespan encompassed at the higher levels has also gradually decreased, so that the time bucket of perhaps a week at the MPS I level, has been reduced to a matter of minutes or seconds at the cell and equipment levels.
