Abstract

This chapter describes the operation of control at the shop level. The shop control system (SCS) forms the second highest level of the hierarchy of control (as discussed in Chapter 4), and is mainly concerned with taking the requirements given by the factory level, and translating these into commands or goals for each cell. In doing so, it should take account of the constraints that apply both in terms of machine capacities and in terms of, for example, tooling or transport provision. In addition the SCS has to take account of factors such as the due date of particular jobs.
