Summary

The paper deals with the history of geoscience research in India from the days of Kautilya, Varahamihira to the present decade and the involvement of different organisations in the country in its furtherance. The present scene of the geoscience activities in the country is also reviewed. The study of the history of documentation work reveals that the documentation activity in India in the field of geoscience was initiated during 3rd quarter of the 19th Century. The present state of affairs in the documentation and information activities in post-independence period and the different services rendered by the GSI at the national level are discussed. Further role, the GSI has to play in the organisation of a national information system in earth sciences under the NISSAT plan of Govt. of India is mentioned.
