Summary
In France, the Bureau National de l’Information Scientifique et Technique coordinates and promotes national information activities in the various scientific and technological fields.
Support has been given to the development of networks, multilingual tools, on-line searching, installation of data bases on host computers and the coordination between the national network and EURONET.
The major geological information service in France is operated by the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières through its Geological Survey and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique through its Centre de Documentation Scientifique et Technique.
The common geological data base PASCAL-GEODE is available for on-line searching through ESA/SDS in Frascati.
The oil industry has always played an important part in the development of the information sciences in France. The various oil companies started and developed the on-line activities in France.
