Summary
“Data” are the smallest indivisible units of information utilized or produced in the context of specific intellectual activities; “documentation”, on the other hand, refers to the creation of recorded information (including “data”) and the subsequent control, analysis and dissemination of knowledge concerning recorded information. Apart from this semantic link, there are a variety of functional and organizational commonalities which should and do serve to link groups that usually deal with “data” and “documentation” activities in mutual isolation. On the premise that all information should be managed as a resource in support of decision-making in substantive areas, these links should be strengthened through the integration of “literature” and “data” secondary services, the coordinated management of total information resources and the sharing of expertise in the application of information technology.
